The Bears of Blue River is a special book for me because it centers on the town, Shelbyville, IN, where I have grown up and gone to school. As a student, I read this book in class to connect with how Shelbyville looked in the past and how it looks now. The Bears of Blue River is a historical fiction novel that explains about life in the pioneer days. The book is commonly known around Shelbyville, but I have a hard time finding others, out of town, who have read the book. The Bears of Blue River focuses on an adventurous boy named Little Balser. He lives in a log cabin on the bank of the Big Blue River. Little Balser becomes lost in the forest and faces a fierce one-eared bear. The Bears of Blue River focuses on the difficulties that a young boy faces in pioneer Indiana.

Very neat book choice. I live close to Shelbyville. This is a great book for students to compare life in Indiana then and now. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGreat job incorporating a historical fiction book! Very neat that you live where the book is centered around! Thanks for including a picture of the actual statue as well. This would be so great to incorporate in an Indiana History unit. Students would feel so connected to the storyline because it takes place near where they live. Thanks for sharing this book with us!
