The Butter Battle by Dr. Seuss. I chose this book to share because Dr. Seuss is a favorite by all young children. This book is about the different lives between the Yooks and the Zooks, and the war that breaks out based upon who eats their buttered bread side up or side down. This book similar to many Dr. Seuss's stories had rhyming to it and many silly made up words that will keep students engaged. I chose this specific Dr. Seuss book because I feel that there are many ways in which it can be used in the classroom. I think that this book could be used to discuss the differences between people, and how everyone is unique, and its good that we are not all the same. I also think that you could use this book as a mini-lesson for any specific wars. You could discuss with students why wars happen? I also like this book because it is almost left with an unanswered ending, leaving children to explore and read more to discover what happens next. I think that this is great because you could use a book like this as a writing prompt. Have student create what THEY want the ending of the story to be.
Hope you all enjoy! Happy Readings!
