Morgan's Book Share

In this class, we have learned the importance of reading out loud to our students. One way to do this is with a great poetry book. Shel Silverstein's "Where the Sidewalk Ends" is a fabulous book of poems and illustrations that appeal to many children of different ages. His poetry reflects the qualities children enjoy in poetry such as humor, animals, and imagination. I enjoyed Shel Silverstein poems as a child and continue to find them enjoyable today. The poems are timeless and can spark students interest in reading and writing poetry. I like this book as an out loud classroom read because each poem is new and doesn't build from what was perhaps read yesterday. This means that even if students are absent, they are not missing out the entire book. I love this book and can't put it down. If you read it to your students, you will probably find them begging for more.

  1. Morgan-I LOVE Shel Silverstein. I included him in my unit of study for my final project! I liked how you would read this to students because it is effective, but also because it varies form day to day. It is important for students to keep up with schoolwork and if a book is being read that is important while they are absent, then they might miss key facts. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Morgan,
I loved Shel Silverstein when I was a student and still enjoy it today! I feel that this is a great book of poetry to read to students. His poetry is a great source of interactions that young children connect with and love. I want to make sure that I have copies of his books in my future classroom library.
