I have chosen to share this book because as I read it last semester it broke down how important it is to stop bullying and create a strong classroom community. Autobiography of a Face is about a girl who is diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma (a form of cancer in her jaw) at a very young age. As a child she went through several surgeries and missed a lot of school. When Lucy does make it to class the other students only make her feel bad for looking different. I think this is a great book for all future educators as it shows first hand what your students go through when they are bullied and it helps show you what can be done to prevent it from ever happening. I feel that if you have an open community style classroom it lessons the chance of bullying because your students get to know and feel comfortable with everyone in the classroom. It also helps outside the classroom beccause children don't want to see thier friends being bullied and will help one another.
Stefanie,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing. This sounds like a great book that will open up a discussion about how it feels to be teased for being different. Many children experience teasing and bullying; and it is up to us as educators to stand up and prevent bullying from occuring in our own classrooms. I will be adding this book to my "to read" list.

I am definitely going to check this book out at the library! I have never heard of the title, but I am very, very interested in reading it now. Thank you so much for suggesting this title! I think open community classrooms are great, and I am just really excited to read this book!
