The Same Stuff as Stars by Katherine Paterson

This book is about the struggles of a little girl when her father is in jail, and her mother is an alcoholic. Angel, the little girl, and her little brother move in with their grandmother. This book was listed in chapter 7 of our text as a book to "illuminate experiences that children have not had." Sadly, I have seen many students in this exact situation, and I would use it to allow students to connect with literature. It could also show the students that they are not the only ones living that life, and how to come through it a stronger person. I cannot put this book down! I am almost finished with it, and it has been a journey. I wanted to share.

  1. Wow. I love controversial books such as this used in the classroom to help students grow as people. I think that there are many children out there who could connect with a book such as this, and i think even for the children who have never experienced anything like this would still grow from this book. You mention that you "cant put this book down". Is this not a picture book? True story? what age group would you suggest this book for.

    Thanks for your share!

  2. What a great story. I will be acquiring this one. It is truly sad how many children do live this life.Children who have not experienced anything like these characters can still learn much from this book about how others live and the struggles they live with. Thanks for sharing.

  3. It is a chapter book, and I just finished it. What a great story. It is listed in fiction, but because of the acknowledgements, I feel like it may have been based on a true story. I am glad I read it because I know I will be faced with children going through the same life style. It is good to have insight of the feelings children going through this may have in order to help them through their journey of life. The book suggests ages 8-12 for this book.
