This is one of the stories in the Freckleface Strawberry book series written by actress Julianne Moore. These are very prevalent in the modern day classrooms as I was introduced to the series from one of my observing teachers. I read this book to the little boy I babysat. He claimed that it was his favorite book because he liked the end of the story. The plot is about Freckleface Strawberry and her "Early Bird" classroom which she attends before school. When it rains outside, the children are forced to play inside which only leaves one activity: dodgeball. Freckleface Strawberry dislikes this sport so much because of a mean boy who tries to get everyone out. It follows her adventures with the dodgeball bully and how they reconcile their differences. The story has a great message for students who are learning about judgement and harmony at school. Another thing I liked about this book was that it talked about play time when most books focus on other parts of the school day. This encourages students to play fair and safely and will teach them how to be a good teammate or friend. I would use this in the classroom to help convey these ideas and show them the lessons that are learned.
Meredith,
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of this series before, but I really enjoy it! I like that it shows that all students can be friends and not bullies. This would be a great book to read to students to discuss how important it is being friends and to not bully anybody.

Thank you for sharing this book. I have not heard of it. I was immediately drawn to the title, well, because I was that freckled face girl with strawberry blonde hair. Haha! I agree the aspect of playtime is really unique to children's literature during school. I like that the book teaches about respecting others and the dangers of bullying.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great book to teach a great lesson! It looks like I'm going to be searching for a lot of books to check out and read at the library :) I like how mention that it talks about play time and how the book teaches kids to play fair. Definitely a great lesson we need to remind students of!
ReplyDeleteIn my course about children and movement we discussed dodge ball specifically so the title really stood out to me. I believe there is a huge push to have zero tolerance of bullying, but we still have to be vigilant and continue educating about the effects of bullying. I also really liked that this book focus on playing fairly and respecting others, specifically on the playground. It is definitely an opportunity for someone to bully another student when on the playground because there is less opportunities for teachers to see and hear everything between students. Often, the playground and lunch is the main source of bullying. Thank you for the resource. Melissa
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of this series myself, but they seem to have a great message to them. Now that I have taken the Gym course last semester, I do not agree with dodge ball played at school. It is not fun for every child, and it is basically target practice for others. It is good that they end up reconciling their differences and I too like that this is about play time. Thanks for sharing I will definitely have to check this book out!
