I would like to share with you a series of books written by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver. Yes, the "Fonz" is out writing children's books. The Hank Zipzer collection contains seventeen books perfect for a third or fourth grade reading level. The stories are based on the childhood of Henry Winkler. The first book, "Niagara Falls, or Does It," is about Hank's first week in fourth grade. He really struggles with the first writing assignment his teacher gives him, so he creates a "living essay" of his summer vacation to Niagara Falls to complete instead, but this plan leads him into some big trouble. Hank is a brilliant kid who just doesn't seem to know to apply it to writing or reading. The book gently discusses learning differences, and encourages the reader that different doesn't mean bad. Morgan,
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of this book series before, but I am so glad that you shared these books! I like how Niagara Falls, or Does It leads into learning differences. Talking about learning differences and having everyone know that they are not something bad can be tough in a classroom. This book would be a great reference to show students that there are not only classmates who have learning differences, but tons of other people in the world.

Morgan,
ReplyDeleteLike Shelby, I have never heard about this series before. I also wasn't aware that the "Fonz" was now a children's author, which just proves you learn something new every day!
I think it is important for children to know that everyone does learn differently; I agree with Shelby when she says it could be a potentially tough subject, yet I feel that children need to understand it is perfectly acceptable not to learn exactly the same way someone else does. I even think it is important for children to start to recognize their own preferred learning styles to help them become the best student they are capable of being.
Thanks for sharing!
