I found this book, The Don't-give-up Kid, while researching books for teachers online. This is a book about a child with a reading disability, as well as other learning disabilities. I think this would be a good book for teachers to read and then read to the class. It is an inspirational book about a child who doesn't give up at anything he does. He finds creative ways to overcome his disabilities. I think books like these really reinforce to children that just because someone has a disability does not mean that they need to be treated differently. A disability does not define a child, it is just part of who they are.
This looks like a great book and I'm definitely going to see if the library has it so I can read it. This looks like a book I would really probably use in my classroom. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteCarly,
ReplyDeleteI am going to be a special education teacher and I love hearing about all of the books that inspire students with disabilities to embrace learning and not focus on what they are not able to do. I really liked how you mentioned that books like these teaches tolerance and impacts student's perception of others with disabilities. It also reminds us as teacher to not lower our standards or treat them differently. High expectations of all students will encourage them to be life-long learners and to inspire them to continue breaking through the boundaries of their disabilities. Thank you! Melissa
Carly,
ReplyDeleteI really think this book would be an excellent book to read to students; Personally, I think all students could potentially benefit from the message that you should always keep trying. Yet, I think this book will be even more powerful for those students who do suffer from disabilities and often unrepresented in literature.
Thanks for sharing!
