I want to share the book I Like Myself by Karen Beaumont and illustrated by David Catrow. I ran into this book last semester when we were assignment to find a book to read aloud. I originally chose this book because it had beautiful, rich and enchanting illustrations. This book is all about the wonderful, unique qualities that make us special. Reading this book is a great way to introduce pride in self and diversity in the classroom. I would recommend this book for any elementary classroom, the teacher will love it too!
Mesha,
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a wonderful book that could be used while you are building a classroom community where you want each student to feel as if they are a valuable member. What grades levels do you feel this book is most appropriate for?

Mesha,
ReplyDeleteI believe it is so important to not only teach academics, but to encourage a positive self-image. Sometimes I think that schools are falling short of celebrating student’s qualities. I have not read I Like Myself before, but I will be sure to check it out when I go to the library today. Thank you for telling me about the book because all students are special and anytime we can teach diversity and pride will give our students a better education.
Trish,
ReplyDeleteThis book is written for early elementary learners but it can be used in middle school to prove the point that no matter how old you get, pride in yourself goes a long way and is very important. It is a great confidence booster and children at all ages need that posistive reinforcement.
Mesha,
ReplyDeleteI've actually read this book before and I agree with everything you stated about the book. The illustrations is also the why it caught my eye too.
I also agree with Melissa that school isn't just for academics but also self discovery. THe children need to be comfortable with whoe they are as a person so they can grow emotionally, intellecually, and socially.
