Running Out of Time is a book that would be a great read for fourth and fifth graders. It is about a young girl, Jessie, who grows up in Clifton, Indiana in the year 1840. As a diphtheria outbreak occurs in her village, Jessie's mother confides in her that the year is really 1996. Jessie is sent on a mission out of the village, which is a museum, to retrieve a cure for the diphtheria outbreaks. Jessie has to overcome challenges from strangers and learn how to survive in the year 1996 and be able to save her family and village. I read this book in fourth grade and I loved it. I have since reread the book several times.
Running Out of Time provides students with examples of how life was in the past. The action included in this book will keep students on the edge of their seats to see if Jessie is able to help her family and village survive the diphtheria outbreak.

Shelby,
ReplyDeleteIt is funny that you choose to share this book. Just a few days ago I was talking to someone about books and she was telling me about this exact book! She couldn't remember the name of it, only that she had really enjoyed reading it. Now, thanks to you, I can check this book and read it for myself. I can't wait to find out how a mother managed to hide the fact it was 1996 from her family!
