Angie's book to share
This book is great for children of all ages, but especially older children who can reflect on some life experiences.
It is a book about the background of a momma and how she recalls it to her child. It is how she remembers her childhood and the culture that she is from. I find this book so thrilling because not only can we learn about the life of someone else and where they are from, but we can connect to things mentioned in the book that remind us of our childhood. I picked this book to use with children because it allows for reflection of the students and how their background influences who they are as a person and a learner. Every student is different and a class can learn about others through the knowledge of the students' backgrounds. When I was working with some sixth graders, we used this book as a get to know me activity. I first read the book, and then had the students come up with their own story about where they were from. This was a neat activity because they really did go beyond the geographical location of where they were from and they shared about the experiences that they were from.

Love it. This could be an excellent discussion starter when building a classroom community.
ReplyDeleteAngie,
ReplyDeleteI feel that this book would be a terrific way for students to get to know one another, while allowing you as the teacher to learn more about each student. I can also easily envision allowing children to create a transmediation type project that allows them to share where they are from....perhaps they could write a song, or create a piece of artwork, or cook a meal that helps show the class where they are from. This is definately a book I will keep in mind to help me build a strong classroom community! Thanks for sharing!

Angie,
ReplyDeleteI think that this is a great way for kids to put themselves in someone's shoes. I am defiantly going to get this book and see if it's something I would like to use in my future classroom. Thanks for the suggestion!
This is an awesome way to have children open up about themselves to others. This is also a good time to practice respect and tolerance towards peers as they share theit qualitites that are different/unique.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you can use this book as a launch and “get to know me” activity! I bet this would be a great resource for a Unit of Study on Memoirs! I really can’t wait to order it and add it to my classroom library! Thanks for sharing.
