While I realize that not all schools use Lexile scores to level readers, I often use this find a book tool on this site to help me recommend books for students I have worked with. There are several things I like about this particular tool. One is that I like is you don't have to know what a child's Lexile Score is to find suggested books. You have the option of entering an exact Lexile score, a Lexile range, or a grade level. If you choose grade level, a submenu allows you to choose whether the books you read are too easy, just right or too hard. After you enter this information, the next page list 28 categories (many of these categories have more than 10 sub-categories) that allow you choose books that your students are interested in. This is a really helpful feature and really allows you to create a customized book list based on the individual student’s interests. Once you select the categories, a list will come up of books that fit into your criteria. Not only are you given the title and author about the book, you are also given the page number and a brief summary of what the book is about. On this page you can also place limiters on your search, such as book type, number of pages, or even language. You can even choose only to have award winners on your list. I feel that this feature could be helpful not only to teachers in creating reading lists, but to students and their parents to help them identify new books they might enjoy reading.
Additionally, this site has information about Lexile scores and how to use them. It also allows you to convert scores from DIBELS,TOEFL, and TABE to Lexile scores to allow you to locate books within your Lexile range. Additionally, there is a Spanish version to help you locate books written in Spanish for ESL students.

Trish,
ReplyDeleteI really like Lexile.com it is such a great tool to use to help children know what books to choose.
Thank you so much for sharing this resource. I have already bookmarked it for future reference. It is such a good tool for a new teacher to have while he or she is still determining the appropriate level to teach certain books to a class or to recommend books for individuals. This site does it all!
ReplyDelete(Question: I am signed in to my Google Account, yet Blogger would not let me use my Google profile to comment... I had to use my livejournal account... any ideas?
