The Muriel books are a series written by Sue Alexander. Muriel is a character who is always asked to help solve problems in her town. She is very helpful, witty, swift, and is a heroic figure. In this book, Muriel is asked to tightrope at the Queen's birthday party, but when she arrives the Queen is sobbing because someone stole her Chinese Lantern decorations. She asks Muriel to hep her solve the mystery and find out what happened to her party decor. The suspense this book provides keeps children on their toes and wanting to experience the rest of the story. This book could be used in a mystery unit to help introduce what a mystery is and could ultimately end with the children writing their own variation of the story.

Meredith,
ReplyDeleteThese kinds of stories do make kids want to keep reading. They also make for excellent literature circle discussions when kids share their predictions. They can really get each other thinking this way. Thanks for sharing.

Merideth,
ReplyDeleteWhile I have never read this book, I think that your explanation of using the book is a great example. Students love mysteries and especially ones that have children as the main character. I think that the students would be able to relate to the girl in the book and would also find the story very interesting. I think that this book is a great way to introduce a lesson and would be successful.
